Newly elected 14th District Rep. Deb Manjarrez officially takes office

Rep. Deb Manjarrez officially began serving her first term representing the 14th Legislative District as the Washington State Legislature convened on Monday.

“Taking the oath of office in our state’s Capitol with family looking on is something I will never forget. Knowing my constituents have sent me to Olympia to represent them and be their voice is humbling and a great privilege,” said Manjarrez, R-Wapato. “I am ready to get to work and reduce the cost of living, improve the safety of our communities, address the housing and child care crises, and ensure small businesses have the tools they need to succeed.”

Manjarrez is serving on three committees in the 2025 session. She is an assistant ranking Republican on the House Housing Committee.

“Washington is one of the most expensive states to buy a home. It also ranks near the bottom in housing units per household. The people in my district and across the state need affordable and accessible housing,” said Manjarrez. “I look forward to being directly involved in housing issues.”

The committee considers housing accessibility, affordability, assistance, and supply; land use and zoning primarily related to residential uses; landlord-tenant law; homelessness; homeownership; and farmworker housing.

Manjarrez is also on the Appropriations Committee, which covers the operating budget and other fiscal issues, such as pension policy and compensation.

“The operating budget is the primary focus of the legislative session given the $4 billion budget shortfall. Some estimates project the deficit to be about $10 billion over the four-year outlook,” said Manjarrez. “It is not a revenue problem, it is a spending problem. I look forward to some lively debate in appropriations on the budget situation.”

She will also serve on the Health Care and Wellness Committee.

The legislative session is scheduled for 105 days and will adjourn on April 27.
